What Can Medical Trust Be Used For?

by Mike Stensrud
(Lake Mills, Iowa)

What can the proceeds from a medical trust be used for?

1.Can the trustee buy a car to transport the beneficiary?

2.The beneficiary lives with the trustee, so can the trustee remodel a portion of the home to put a bathroom in the bene's bedroom?

3.Can the trustee buy a ranger, all terrain vehicle, for the beneficiary to drive around the trustee's farm?

Thank you,
Mike

Medical Trust Provisions
by: Mo Johnson

Hi Mike, excellent questions. Unfortunately I cannot answer them. There are unique and specific rules in each state that govern what a "medical trust" can be used for and not disqualify a person from medicaid. I talk more about this at Special Needs Trust and Disability Trust.

However, in the end, you really will need to talk to an experienced, local, Iowa Estate Planning or Trust Attorney.
